Audience viewing patterns in theatrical (cinema) and OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms have evolved significantly over the past few years. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the shift towards OTT platforms as theatres were closed or operated at limited capacity. This period saw an increase in first-run movies being released directly on streaming platforms. The window between theatrical release and availability on OTT has shortened, sometimes to just a few weeks. And so has the humongous amount of money paid for the OTT rights. The current mantra is first release on theatrical and then to other platforms.
